About the numbering system.
All parts begin with a three-digit number: newels always begin with
"2," balusters with "3." The second two digits designate the style: _01
is French, _02 is Italian, etc. The next set of numbers and letters
indicates
the width of the unturned portion, the style of the top, and any
special
decorative treatment. Baluster width is designated by 0 for 1 1/4", 1
for
1 3/4", and 2 for 2 1/4"; style of the top by R for round and S for
square.
Newel width is designated by 3 for 3" and 3.5 for 3 1/2". Newels have
three
top styles: those intended to go under rail fittings have a dowel top,
designated by D; those with square tops for attaching the rail may have
a ball top finial, designated by B; and landing newels with a longer
top
square are designated by LB. The third portion of the part number is
two
letters describing the material from which the part is made. Typical
materials
are red oak, designated by RO, hard maple by HM, soft maple by MA,
cherry
by CH, paint grade by PG, and primed paint grade by PR. Decorative
treatment
such as fluting or twisting is indicated following the size and top
style,
e.g., 1RF or 3.5DT.
