Grain Matched Bending Rail is cut into slats from a single blank of wood with minimal kerf loss.  Each slat is then tongue and grooved for alignment, reassembled and profiled.  When glued in place, the rail holds its curve and the individual slats tend to disappear.  Please review the information in the Tips Section below before ordering.

Tips Section

How To Order:
Standard bending rail is made of 9 slats in the handgrip portion of the rail and either 2 or 4 more slats to form the fluting in HRL-1 and HRL-2, respectively.  This rail can be successfully bent to a radius of about 4 feet.  By special order, an 11-slat rail can be supplied that will bend to radius of about 2 1/2 feet.  As with all bending rail, best results are obtained by bending 1 foot more than required at each end.

How To Bend:
Bending rail is supplied with poplar bending mold which provides a flat clamping surface in the handgrip area of the rail, and another section of molding which mates with the flute section of the rail.  The rail can be glued in position as a whole unit or in two stages by gluing first the handgrip section and then adding the fluting after the core has set.  We recommend Titebond® Extend Wood Glue for its long open time and its rigidity when set.  Glues which form flexible films may allow spring-back.  Several days should be allowed for glue moisture to escape from the rail before finish sanding.
